Description
Bacillus cereus Agar (Mossel)
Selective medium for Bacillus cereus isolation and enumeration in foodstuffs, recommended by ISO 7932.
DESCRIPTION
Bacillus Cereus Agar (Mossel) is used for growing and isolation of Bacillus cereus, which causes food toxinfections. Bacillus cereus
produces two toxins, one heat stable and emetic, the other thermostable that causes diarrhoea.
PRINCIPLE
The meat extract supplies vitamins and growth factors to Bacillus cereus. Peptone supplies nitrogen, vitamins and aminoacids. Sodium
chloride keeps the medium osmotic balance. D-mannitol is present as fermentable carbohydrate and phenol red as pH indicator.
Polymyxin B is a selective agent that inhibits the growth of coliforms. Egg yolk emulsion is added for the lecitinase production test. Agar
is the solidifying agent.
