Medium for enterobacteria differentiation.
CHRISTENSEN UREA AGAR is a medium for determination of urease enzyme on culture of Proteus and other microorganisms, as enterococci and yeasts (Cryptococcus). Microorganisms which possess urease activity hydrolyze urea, with production of ammonium ions and consequent colour change of the indicator to purple-red (alkaline pH). Positive reaction of Proteus is observed after 6 hours of incubation on slant and on all medium within 24 hours. Urease positive strains of Enterobacter, Citrobacter, Klebsiella hydrolyze urea as rapidly.
