MacConkey MUG Agar is a moderately selective medium used for the isolation of Gram negative enteric bacilli from faeces, urine, food, wastewater and other materials of sanitary importance for the differentiation of lactose fermenting organisms from non fermenting ones. The medium, which contains 4-methylumbelliferyl-beta-D-glucuronide (MUG), allows to presumptively identify Escherichia coli from the primary plating medium within five minutes by observing for fluorescent colonies under long-wave UV light..
