Enzymatic digest of casein provides amino acids, nitrogen, carbon, vitamins and minerals. Starch is an energy source for those organisms which produce the enzyme amylase. Yeast extract is a source of vitamins, particularly of B-group. Dextrose is the fermentable carbohydrate. Marine salt serves to replicate the saltwater marine environment. Calcium carbonate serves as pH indicator as it precipitates in case of acid production forming a clear zone around colonies.
