The early ones were egg-based formulations which included Lowenstein-Jensen Medium and Petragnani Medium. Later, Dubos and Middlebrook developed various formulations containing oleic acid and albumin, which protected Mycobacterium from toxic agents, helping for the growth of tubercle bacilli.
